I have been (clears throat) hoarding McCall’s pattern #7634 for some time because I wanted the right fabric to speak to me and not simply sew it for the sake of sewing. When recovering from Covid and the sewing bug bit, I discovered a powder blue and bone knit fabric (2 way stretch). However, I did not want another blue sweater/top in my wardrobe. So purchased Greenstyle Creations Flare leggings for relaxed slacks with front pockets that suited the fabric. I would not exactly call them leggings because I view leggings as constricting. Greenstyle Flares are exactly as stated, loose fit, flare legs… or like my mama use to say “Bellbottoms”! (Realistically they are boot cut).
I did not have enough blue fabric to make the set solid so I mulled over different ways that I could combine the two. I started with the Greenstyle Flares in a solid blue that took me about 90 minutes start to finish. This was my first time using my projector for adult clothing given that I usually project pattern pieces for baby items. I saved so much time (and trees) and will probably do this more going forward to save time normally spent taping letter size paper together from a PDF file.

I like the comfort and simplicity of the Flares. Instead of an encased elasticized waistband, 1/4″ elastic is sewn onto the inner waistband. The added 4mm length topstitching on the pockets and waistband really gave it clean and more professional appearance.

I did not need any inseam adjustments on my 5’7″ 133lb frame using Greenstyle size F. I was considering size E but was concerned that it would be close fitting in the thighs and hips and that would not. have looked good with this knit fabric.
Covid resulted in the loss of 5lbs and now think E would fit better TODAY but I am happy with slightly loose Flares until I gain it back.
The instructions include an option for the elasticized waist and since most of my Fabletics have that, I decided to go that path. The only thing that I wish that I reconsidered is not pulling the tension on the elastic 1″ more for the times that my waist is 29 (winter) so that it is more snug. Once I finished the Flares, I pressed the waistband and admired my work.
The next day I started McCalls 7634 and decided to use whatever remaining blue fabric for the front where the grommets are placed. Then I thought, “Hmmmmm what about blue cuffs and waistband“? Then as I continued sewing, I cut 2 hoods so that it was bone on the outside and blue inner.

The front panel that later housed the grommets was a first for me

I initially concerned that it was low cut then realized that the cord would address this

I’m glad that I went with the blue waistband and sleeve cuffs

Ok who said I’m too old for a racing stripe on the sleeve? 😝

I loved the way this turned out

A two toned hood and Boom! It is complete

I hope this inspires you to sew. Remember I host sewing workshops for 4 ore more so please feel free to contact me if interested.
